SHREDDER ORIGINS AND DESIGN THEORY

In 1960, the first Newell family Shredder was built and patented by Alton Newell. Scott Newell, Chairman and CEO of The Shredder Company, built the second Newell Shredder in 1961 and has been designing, building and operating Shredding systems since that time. Scott Newell III, President of TSC, has been daily building and working with shredding systems since 1981. During this time the Newell family have designed and built more Shredding systems than any other group. More than 50% of all Shredders ever sold have been supplied directly by Newell, licensed by Newell, or use the Newell design.

The Shredder Company was formed by Scott Newell and Scott Newell III upon the death of Alton Newell in the year 2000, when the Newell family business was divided into separate ownership of Alton Newell's children. The wider Newell family owns and operates Shredding plants and non-ferrous recovery facilities located across the United States and in the past have operated Shredding plants and associated non-ferrous metal recovery facilities all over the world. This real-life experience operating scrap-shredding equipment is reflected in every product made by TSC.

TSC operates from our modern manufacturing plant and steel foundry, located on a large site in Canutillo, (El Paso) Texas, with a skilled workforce trained by the Newell family using the experience gained in decades of successful Shredder design and operation. Our engineering department is staffed with personnel who have practical operating experience as well as theoretical knowledge. Our manufacturing division is composed of an efficient, effective crew with a solid understanding of the entire assembly process, from beginning to end. The foundry division is staffed with a team which has been producing steel alloys since 1974. This allows TSC to design and fabricate quality replacement castings for all types of Shredding equipment and to be constantly improving on the casting design and composition. Together this set of skills allows for The Shredder Company to deliver value and top-tier quality in every product.

The Newell Recycling Company of El Paso, which is owned by the Scott Newell family, is a practical training ground for employees and provides a "sandbox" for experimental design ideas. Also, since this plant is operated for profit, it both moderates and inspires the design criteria for all TSC engineering decisions by ensuring testing in a real-world environment. The Shredder Company design philosophy requires all design decisions to be oriented toward providing equipment that will deliver the lowest cost per ton of material processed over the entire life of the shredder, ensuring that our equipment and the investment for that equipment will always provide the best value.

Almost every important design feature in modern shredding plants was first used in machines built by Newell. The top and bottom design Shredder was invented by Newell. The use of Double Feed Roller systems was invented and used first by Newell. The use of air separation systems connected to the Shredder were first used by Newell and was used until the invention of "damp shredding systems"--also invented by Newell--which today have developed into Smart Water Systems, where the use of water is monitored and controlled by computer so that the machine always has the proper amount of water. The Super Heavy Duty Shredder, which allowed processing of heavier steel scrap, was invented and first used by Newell. The Mega Shredder - shredders with 120 inch diameter (3 meter) hammer circles - was first invented and used by Newell. The use of the Smart Shredding System (SSS) which uses a computer to control the feed rate at which scrap is shredded was invented by Newell and first used in our machines. This computer program has been designed using actual operating experience so the plant always runs at peak efficiency; instead of relying on each new operator's learning curve, the new shredder installation can begin operation on its first day with "50 years of experience". SSS allows any plant to be controlled and operate according to the World's Best Practice.

The Shredder Company is the proud keeper of a family business that is the leader in the design and manufacture of Shredding systems. This leadership is apparent in that all Shredders manufactured in the world today still try to adopt the latest Newell innovations. Today's TSC shredders are extremely robust and feature our "SXS" standard of efficiency and durability. This means that the equipment is "Smart and Xtra Strong", sophisticated, and that the shredder built today is the final product of a long evolutionary process where theoretical design has been modified by actual experience and results. Our SXS series of Shredders are the most productive and cost-efficient machines available; and when better shredders are built, you may be sure that they will first be built by Newell.
